~The ABCs of an Author
visit with Lisa Mullarkey~
Audience:
I tailor my presentation to a K-8 audience. Group size? The more the
merrier! With the older kids, I have a great revision activity that has
been known to excite even the toughest 6-8th graders!
Beach
Bash: In honor of Splashing by the Shore, why not have students dress
in Hawaiian shirts and wear sunglasses? Let them bring in a beach towel and
kick back! Or invite them to Shine and Sparkle like Katharine with glittery
items. Maybe Crockett's coonskin hat will be the item of the day? Checkout
out my BLOG
to see pictures from past school visits.
Contest:
Kids love contests! In my packet, I include a sample to consider. Anyone
who participates has a chance to win a twenty-minute dessert get-together
with me on the day of my visit. I’ll provide the form, you provide the
treats!
C
is also for
Classics!
My published adaptations: The Red Badge of
Courage, King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table, The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer, Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows,
A
Christmas Carol, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Call of the Wild, The
Phantom of the Opera, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Did
I mention that I have more adaptations coming out in 2011? Yep, it’s
true:White Fang, Oliver Twist, The Invisible Man, Rebecca of Sunnybrook
Farm, Heidi, and Anne of Green Gables.
Equipment
needed: I’ll bring my own laptop/LCD projector, and three-pronged extension
cord. I’ll need a microphone, cart for equipment, and a table for display.
That’s it! Excerpt: Read a
chapter of Katharine the Almost Great Uses Her Common Cents
on my website.
Flexible:
As a teacher and a librarian, I know that flexibility is a MUST!
Giving
Back: Giving back is~ as Martha would say~ A GOOD THING!! I donate a
percentage of each speaking fee to help fight ALS. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease.)
Honorarium:
2010-2011 school year: $950 a day plus transportation costs over 40 miles.
(Round Trip) If an overnight stay is required, a hotel room should be
provided. If two or more schools in your district book me for consecutive
days, you can split these costs AND get one FREE
evening
workshop for all parents in your district. (Workshops are normally $350)
Inspiration:
Which book from my childhood changed my life? Which authors have inspired
me? What are the mystery items in my bag?? Inspiration and motivation…my
presentations are packed with both.
Jokes,
songs, game shows, Play-Doh? How do they fit into my talk? In an organized,
fun-filled way! Students will actively participate in my presentations in
many ways.
Kudos
to you! Bringing in authors and illustrators shows that you value books and
reading! We need more people like you on board to promote literature and
life-long reading. Give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back.
K is also for Katharine the Almost Great
series! Thinking it's too girly for your boys? Then you haven't met her
cousin Crockett who is featured in every book!
Location,
location, location! The best place to speak to your students? Your library,
of course! My library wasn’t very big when I hosted author events but I
packed a lot of kids in by rearranging furniture.
Money
back guarantee! Yep…it’s true. No questions asked.
Not
just for students: Invite parents, grandparents, the newspaper, other
librarians in your district, your Language Arts supervisor, PTO/PTA Board,
etc. Good things are happening in our schools. Let’s show them!
Ordering
books: You can order books through Gibbs Smith (www.gibbs-smith.com)
and ABDO publishers. (www.abdopub.com)
I’ll send you a book order to send home with your students that have reviews
and the appropriate information on it. I’ll email a few versions to you: one
that charges the students the cover price and one that reflects the discount
if you choose to pass it along to them. Some schools keep this “profit” to
help defray the costs of the author visit. See book order
HERE.
Preparation!
The more time you spend familiarizing the students and teachers with my work
before I arrive, the more meaningful the visit will be for them. To make it
easy-breezy, I have a
webquest/scavenger hunt for the kids to complete.
It's the perfect way to introduce me to the kids!
Payment is expected and appreciated on the day I visit.

Reluctant
Readers: Squash the Resistance is just one of my presentations
available for parents, faculty meetings, workshops, symposiums, etc. I have
several other topics listed on my website that have been well-received. I
use my experiences as a parent, classroom teacher, and a librarian/media
specialist to give you the latest lowdown on the problems facing children
and literacy today and help you discover ways to become part of the
solution. Check out my Katharine related recipes
on my site. Crockett Crunch, anyone?
Schedule:
I love to talk and have lots to say so I need an hour to speak to students
in grades 1-8. (The hour includes settling in, questions, etc.) For
kindergarten, a 30-minute period is usually what they can handle before
getting restless. Let's talk about the best way to group classes together.
Teachers:
I enjoy speaking with them and would be happy to eat with the staff on the
day of my visit, stop into classrooms for a quick “hi” if time permits,
etc.
Teacher Guides
are available for my Katharine series on my website. Check out my
TESTIMONIALS,
too!
Unlimited
Enthusiasm and Energy: I have it and it’s contagious! Check my
Upcoming
events to see if I'll be in your area anytime soon!
Valuable:
Your time! I respect that. I’m organized, promptly return emails and phone
calls, am easy to work with, and aim to please. V
is also for
VIDEOS. I'll be adding new ones in the coming months!
Website:
I update my website regularly. If requested, I’ll do a shout out to your
school and write a personalized letter to your students to be read in the
library. Ask me about
The Write Stuff.
Xcellent
ideas welcome! Have some cool ideas for hosting me at your school?
Cafeteria making beach ball cookies? Working on a beachy craft? Please
share! I’d love to hear them and will give you credit on my website.
Yuck!
Rejections stink but are a necessary evil and have made me a stronger and
more focused writer. Kids will read my rejections (After playing Rejection
Collection) and understand that perseverance is often the key in life. I’m a
“glass half-full” type of person!
Zzzzsss…No
one will be catching any of these during my presentation!! Promise!
